generally considered an easy route, it takes an average of 1 h 8 min to complete. the trail is open year-round and is beautiful to visit anytime. beautiful walk through arboretum with lots of exotic trees and beautiful views of the mountains behind. lovely place to spend a few hours. not a wilderness hike. not really a garden. best to stop at visitors center first and get a map. better to drive up and stop at various gardens to the top which is nui. weather was pretty nice and the ground was a little soft in some sections but not too bad for the most part. seems like i missed out on some of the plants blooming but had a relaxing time out there nonetheless. the trails away from the lake are shady and provide a nice contrast to the more planned areas of the garden. perfect for people with little ones. well groomed grounds and easy walks to the lake and the mountains are amazing as a backdrop to this beautiful place. the different trees are stunning and the views of the mountain range need to be seen to be believed! 1/16/2021-started around 0915 and saw 60+ people wandering the park as well (lots of people seem to walk along the main road these days; several groups doing photo shoots).
also saw a few campers using the park which must’ve been nice to do this weekend. some areas have a trail, some are make your own path. really beautiful backdrop of the mountains a great place for a nice walk. lots of places to take pictures. bit muddy—but that’s to be expected after rain. the trails aren’t as well marked but if u want an adventure—just take a trial…. be sure to park at the parking lot pull off about mid way and walk up the littl trail to find the look out. you can also come back right before it closes to snap some great pictures too! a very easy, relaxed and beautiful walk. i like to park at kahua kuou and walk the road to get to the trail so i can make it a loop essentially. well maintained and scenic all the way through. there’s also a beautiful lake with tons of fish! there’s so much to see and love the little trail walk. i camped here in 2016, and had forgotten how beautiful it is. make sure you get there before 4pm gates close at 4. if you do the whole trail it takes at least 4 hours to do.
